Come fishing, exploring and adventuring through one of New Zealand's most spectacular wilderness areas with Matt Wells ~ Nomadic Kayak Fishing.

This is a unique opportunity to come along on a fishing trip with me, Matt Wells, and experience Tamatea/Dusky Sound from onboard the MV Tasman Explorer.

Over four nights, we'll explore the  sounds of Fiordland, fish some of its most productive waters, chase a variety of species, explore remote locations and make the most of everything this extraordinary part of New Zealand has to offer.

Whether you're an experienced angler or simply want to experience Fiordland, this trip is about getting out there, fishing, exploring and sharing the adventure together.

About Matt Wells

Matt Wells is best known as Nomadic Kayak Fishing — a New Zealand fishing YouTuber and content creator who lives out of a van, self-films kayak fishing missions around New Zealand's coastline and spends much of his time living and adventuring off-grid.

His adventures have taken him around some of New Zealand's most remote and challenging fishing environments, and this trip is an opportunity to experience one of them together.

The Adventure

The MV Tasman Explorer is a 21.5-metre vessel designed for exploring the remote waters of Fiordland in comfort.

The trip includes an epic return 30-minute scenic helicopter flight, landing on the vessel on arrival and departing from the vessel back to Manapouri at the end of the trip.

Simply make your way to Manapouri, approximately 20 minutes from Te Anau, and we'll take care of you from there. We're happy to help with travel arrangements.

Fishing

This is first and foremost an adventure and fishing trip, with plenty of opportunities to get amongst the incredible fishing Fiordland has to offer.

Potential species include:

  • Blue cod

  • Bass / hāpuka

  • Kingfish

  • Albacore tuna

  • Trumpeter

  • Terakihi

  • Southern bluefin tuna

  • Bluenose

  • Kahawai

  • Butterfish

  • And plenty more

We'll also have the opportunity to pull cray pots and hopefully get amongst some of Fiordland's enormous crayfish.

You'll also get the chance to learn about processing your catch, different ways of preparing fish, smoking techniques and making the most of what we catch.

Beyond Fishing

There's far more to this trip than fishing.

Depending on conditions and what the trip brings, we'll have opportunities for:

  • Spearfishing

  • Snorkelling

  • Nature walks

  • Waterfalls and rainbows

  • Historic sites

  • Wildlife encounters

  • Remote onshore adventures

  • Exploring the incredible Fiordland scenery

We'll also have the opportunity to visit the SS Waikare, a historic wreck that sank in Dusky Sound in 1910.

Fiordland's famous black coral is another incredible feature of the area. Despite its name, living black coral colonies are actually white, with their characteristic black skeleton hidden beneath. Fiordland is particularly special because black coral grows in relatively shallow water here, unlike the deep-water environments where it is normally found.

Wildlife encounters may include dolphins, whales, penguins, seals, seabirds including albatross, deer and native New Zealand birds.

  • 1 larger cabin with 3 double beds and 3 single beds

Food & Drink

All meals are catered onboard by your private chef, with dietary requirements accommodated.

Alcohol and soft drinks are BYO, so bring your favourites.
